The Avenues Vs. Sugarhouse (Sandy, Cottonwood Heights: houses, school, to live)

So we are seriously contemplating packing it all up and moving to UT within the next 5 years. I am sure eventually we will end up there.

We are non-lds and since i have no patience with people telling me how to live, i would like to avoid any preachy parts of town.

So which is better for a family with school aged children?

I also think we would consider Sandy, and any areas nearby,

I don't know what you mean by "preachy" parts of town. I live in Sugar House on a block that is maybe 50-50, maybe more Nons. I've had 2 sets of missionaries in 7.5 yrs but it was early on and none in at least 5 yrs.

The houses in the Avenues are more expensive in general, with the view. But the lots are smaller in that the houses are built over much of the lot. In SH, more lots have less house in proportion, although both of these are just general rules of thumb. SH has a more funky, diversified feel to it, to me. You really need a good realtor to show you both areas. Drive around on a visit to see which you like better.

Consider Cottonwood Heights. I have a friend who is a realtor, and she told me that Cottonwood Heights is considered to be "non-LDS friendly." Of course, she made a point of telling me that realtors would never use that terminology when showing someone a house, but there definitely are parts of the city that are less welcoming to non-LDS families than others.
