I drove the Mt. Nebo Loop today, for the first time, to see the Fall collors. It is a beautiful drive, through the Uinta Nat'l. Forest. It runs from Payson south to Nephi. http://www.byways.org/explore/byways/2012/index.html

I thought the Payson side was steeper and a bit more scenic for photos. If you do that portion in the morning, you can take pictures over Utah Lake with the sun behind you. The road climbs to 10,000+ ft.

It is closed in the Winter.

Then I had lunch in old-town Payson at the Jalapeno Mexican Cafe; they have been open one week now. The food was very good and a great value. I got a large plate of carne asada (steak), beans, rice, and salad for $6.95. Really, it could have fed two people but I made a pig of myself. There were actual slices of tomatoes and avacodo on the salad, not the usual bits and pieces. The owner is the waitress. I knew I was in a good place when the music is Spanish-language radio and they serve menudo.

Sounds like a wonderful day drive. I am an avid semi pro photographer myself and enjoy this time of year. While my first choices would of course be the Tetons or Yellowstone or even Canyonlands, it's not half bad around here either however as you've pointed out. I'm planning on a trip up Big Cottonwood canyon this coming weekend (preferably on Sunday when the church folks are busy ). My wife picked up some nice large frames that need some prints to be placed on the wall. Nothing like a nice camera and an empty memory card to get started

Great timing on this thread, I was just wondering what the colors are like on the Nebo Loop. So, how are they? Peaking up high yet, near Payson Lakes? I really want to take some pics and don't wanna miss the window!

I think most of the maples were just a tad past the peak. There are rains predicted starting tomorrow and I think that may bring down most of the leaves.

It is one of the great scenic drives in America.

Off of the main loop, there are several smaller roads to various lakes in the area.

If you are fit, it would be a good time for a hike up to the Timpanagos Caves.
