Sorry if this is a dumb question. But I'm scrolling around on GoogleMaps and I can't find Salt Lake City. I can find text saying, say, Central City, or Liberty Park, or pretty much anywhere really. But when I zoom in for a street-level view, there doesn't seem to be anything there, just wide stretches of asphalt and maybe a house or two.

Are there tall office buildings in a "downtown" area? What address would you define as tipifying downtown?

My hotel will be corner of Main and M.L. King. Is that downtown?

Yeah, the corner of Main and King Blvd is definitely in downtown. However, don't go around the city asking where Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard is. For you see, that is just a ceremonial name. Freeway signs and locals will refer to that street as "600 South."

Salt Lake City "proper" is actually pretty small, but in effect, the whole valley is "Salt Lake City" there's no geographical difference other than a sign on the road that tells you that you are in West Valley City, West Jordan, Murray, Midvale, Holladay, Cottonwood Heights, Sandy, Draper, South Salt Lake City, etc....it's all Salt Lake.

Uh from Google Maps look for the big cluster of buildings in the middle of all those areas you saw written in text. Perhaps you're not using the satellite view? (click on the tab in the upper right corner)

Yes, there are a lot of high rises downtown (not as many as Denver, L.A. San Francisco ,and not as tall but they're there). Just type 'salt lake city, utah' in Google maps, click 'Search Maps' and that will take you right downtown. Click on 'Satellite' and that will reveal a cluster of buildings and you'll see their shadows indicating a high rise.
