My husband and I place a high premium on the quality of our daughter's future education (she's 18 months old now) but we dont want to live in Alamo Heights. We'd prefer to live in an historic neighborhood like King William/LaVaca (or of course Monte Vista or Olmos Park, but those places are out of our price range).
I see families in these historic neighborhoods all the time! Where do people in King William/LaVaca send their kids to school? Is there a cool/good private school in the area? Is there a school in SAISD in that area that is not a nightmare? Is there a good montessori school?

It is a wonderful area with a GREAT school!

The local k-8 is Bonham which is highly regarded. It's specialty is its dual language immersion program beginning in kinder. The school has really evolved in recent years and while in years past the higher grades still left something to be desired, these have rapidly improved as well, in large part due to the efforts of the parents in the neighborhood and now a new principal. I encourage you to visit.

There's a parents group called "Friends of Bonham" which has fundraisers aimed at contributing to arts and science/nature programs. The fundraisers are great fun too - potted herbs sale, cooking class with an esteemed San Antonio chef, wine tasting and beer tasting events at neighborhood locales, book fair at Barnes & Noble (unfortunately not in the neighborhood but very well attended), fun outings at Friendly Spot Ice House (on certain days proceeds on specific items go to the program), and more.

The school is very much a part of the community, being located *within* the neighborhood as opposed to the outskirts. Even people who don't have kids participate in many of the school activities. The high school is still "in progress" in terms of improvement, but the same parents who've made a difference at Bonham plan to send their kids there too as well and are already starting to work on improvements.

My kids are still too young for kinder, but we're very involved in the school.

For pre-K, a lot of kids in the neighborhood go to Circle School, which is located in Mahncke Park (about 10 minutes away) or St Paul's Montessori on Grayson. That said, Circle School has become a little less, um, welcoming of kids from Southtown because they all leave for kinder at Bonham (they prefer kids who will stay on). There are other private schools in the Monte Vista/AH area, which are all quite close to Southtown. There are some pre-K/daycare places in the downtown area which are good too, but they tend to be a bit more daycare than school.

Bonham is a great school, I know SAISD has had a rough rep lately. But in the schools where parent participation is high students are really thriving.

Probably the most heartening thing I have heard of late. Iy is time the inferior product from SAISD stop to ever bring this city up.
