Exactly what I was thinking

For people that don't know, killing a K-9 dog is considered the same as killing a police officer.

News at 10 said the dog was in the car, but the a/c was on. I have different thoughts as to a crime having occurred.

IF the a/c was on, then that's that. Regrettable, but that would have been procedure, and the dog may well have had other problems. But if it wasn't, then I wanna see his hide on the courthouse wall.

i want to know what the cause of death was, and the over all circumstances of him leaving the k9 in the car at the training camp. when you hear "dog dies in a car", i will wager real money that 99% of those are not from "existing medical issues". barring some better information and answers to these key questions, i remain very skeptical that there wasn't negligence involved.

Sheriff's Office: Deputy's dog wasn't neglected

Chief Deputy Dale Bennett weighs in after revealing that an investigation is underway.
Quote:
“I am completely satisfied that Duke being in the car had nothing to do with his death,” Bennett said, referring to the 5-year-old yellow Labrador retriever that was trained to detect narcotics.

<snip>

He noted that callers complaining about the dog's death “are mistaken; he was not left in a locked vehicle.”

I think they are covering for an accident. All of a sudden the A/C was on. and it matter if it was locked or not. I don't know many dogs that can open the car door on their own regardless of if it is locked or not.

My biggest problem is you now have a cop saying he left a running unlocked cop car in front of a building while he was inside for a while. Just as bad. You left a running cop car full of cop gear out for someone to take. That says dumb ass either way.

well ive read the follow up on this and i cant say im still satisfied. i will admit im not expertly versed in our police forces history of reliably policing itself, i have little confidence in internal investigations in matters like this.

also a few things i noticed from the articles:

there is no set standard towards leaving the animal in a vehicle being proper or not. wouldnt it be better just to take the animal with you when on duty? from what i understand this would state that while on duty, a police animal may go wherever the handler has right to:
http://www.policek9.com/Fleck/ADA%20Article.pdf

it is commonplace to leave the animals in their kennels in the vehicle. many things that were commonplace were not recognized as unfit or unfair until people started calling them out on it. it was commonplace to be able to smoke anywhere indoors. it was commonplace to have segregated fountains and schools. this is just how it was but that doesnt make it right.

the first article says the dog died in route to the vets office but the second says the officer came back outside to find him already expired.

the officer had the animal on duty for four hours before doing another errand, then maybe getting to go see the vet. it says he was making arrangements but for someone devastated by the loss of a partner, i would think he would head straight to the vet.

also if the dog had been acting unusual throughout the day wouldnt the handler want the dog in eyesight for safer-keeping?

i honestly hope it wasnt negligence, it doesnt just tarnish one officer it gets all of them. if it was though, the officer needs to be punished fully. no paid leave, just fired and criminal charges to boot. it would be wrong to be able to treat the dogs as just animals when handled by the officers but if i hurt one to be charged as if i hurt a human officer. it has to be a two way street.

I am sorry for my ignorance, but.... Really?

is there such thing as being punished for a dogs death?

I love my pups, but if some how they seem to die, yes I would be sad, but i will still get investigated and tried as a negligent murderer?

animal neglect/abuse is punishable offense.

and as someone else already mentioned, police dogs are treated like officers. they're valuable resources and expensive to train, on top of being a police officer's partner. not every dog can work as a k-9.

i believe that every dog deserves to be treated right and have neglectful owners brought to justice. but this is a Big Deal because it is a police dog, one who works to keep san antonio safe and in turn has to trust his partner to keep him safe.

Aw, man.....poor doggie.....

Sure, I am more a Cat Person for sure.....but I do also like dogs {and certain other animals}; German Shepherds, Bassett Hounds, and Cocker Spaniels firstly, and I also do muchly admire Police Dogs as well for their sharpness, functionality, and all-around koolness.....

{I am not an anarchist nor do I believe in it, hence, my understanding for the logically-operative need of Agents of Order, of course}

I do not know anything at all about policing, though I certainly do not want an officer's job at all.....but I will confess that if I ever did indeed join the military services I *have* honestly foremostly-considered either going for being a K-9 MP, or more likely, a NAVY SeaBee.....

I do daily watch the news a lot {not that I blindly-believe nor blindly-agree with everything I hear, see, or read in life, of course not}, but I guess I missed this particular story. Hmmmmmmm.......
