I've lived and worked in the tropics and these temps are not hard to adapt to.
I'm like chaka in this regard. When the ac is set below 80, my trachea and nasal passage become irritated and scratchy. This is when only I'm home. With other people here it is set at 76.

crazedchef take care of yourself. I'm sure being in Baghdad can tax one's health.

programmable thermostat is set to 84 during the day (although it NEVER gets more than about 79 even on hot day), goes down to 74 from 5 to 11 PM and 73 from 11 PM to 6 AM when it goes back to 84.

Electricity bills get no higher than $75 for newer 2000 SF house.

For a little perspective LBJ grew up here in Texas and even went to TSU (then Southwest ) without A/C. It can be done!

The one commonality - and I don't want to pick on anyone but it's just too obvious - is that people who tend to like really low temps are the ones who could stand to lose a few pounds. Just happened with a relative who visited for a week who wanted to change my 78 setting to a 72.

Ha, true! It's not the thermostat that needs to go down, it's the amount of natural insulation.

Might come in handy in the winter, though.

Guilty as charged My wife who weighs exactly half of what I weigh prefers the temp to be in the upper 70s or 80 as opposed to 73...... anyway, I am on my way to fixing this.

I'm a definite fan of programmable thermostats!

I've been really worried about what my bill will be since I've only been here since March. I just got my first bill where I THINK I had the AC on most of the month. I live in a 900sq ft apt. cathedral ceilings (does that make a diff??) the regular bill for electric has been about $40, this month it was $75. I keep it at about 80 during the day, but have been turning it down a bit at night, I was waking up really warm, I hate that. Today I am leaving the house open, we'll see what happens....

We just bumped ours up to 77. It'll get up to 78 before long because 77 is totally and completely livable for both of us. Which is a big hooray!
