I believe sources have stated that seven of these guys are now residing in Canada and authorities have known this for some time. LE sources think that their actions are immigration related.

Ha! They just don't want to go back to Afghanistan, which looks like a crap hole compared to the U.S. and Canada.

Close, FOX is now reporting that seven have been accounted for; but only was made it to Canada...

Quote:
Ten of 17 Afghan military deserters who walked away from a training program on a U.S. Air Force base in Texas remain at large, sources close to the situation told Fox News on Friday, and seven of the men have been accounted for.

Sources said that as of November 2009, one of the deserters was in Canada, one is now a lawful permanent resident in the U.S., one has left the country and another four are in federal custody and in removal proceedings. The other 10 remain unaccounted for (Source).
But to be honest I am suspicious as there would not have been an official BOLO released on all 17 of them if this information was known.

And of course, someone had to make fun of the story!

Homeland Security to Nation: Anybody Seen Our Missing Afghans...the Ones with Guns?

Homeland Security Chief Janet Napilatano dropped a bombshell on Americans today when she let it slip she had just noticed that 17 Afghans in the US for weapons training, and issued Security Passes, seem to have gone missing. But only in the last two years!

Along with the Afghans that had just completed advanced training in counter terrorist activities including car bomb construction, poppy growing, distillation of heroin, infiltration and poisoning of urban water supplies, a significant number of weapons and munitions were also missing from the Red Stone arsenal, "although we can't be sure, because we always seem to have some shrinkage on those items, " said an unconscious Napiltano who also happens to be the former governor of Arizona...(Click on the title for the rest of the spoof! )

How does an foreign deserter who has gone AWOL from a military installation get permanent US residency??? There are innocent people (children) of parents who overstayed their visas that are being deported to various countries (not just Mexico) and cannot return to the US for 10 years.

Sending out a BOLO today after two years is like sending out company holiday cards.....a worthless effort. The news issued it before NCIS did.

There's probably more to the story than the government will ever want to reveal. My guess is that he provided valuable intel and was rewarded with residency. That may also account for the foot-dragging on revealing the other AWOL folks.

The concern is that these Afghans were issued DoD ID cards, meaning they could possibly try to gain access to other military installations.

Apparently this is not isolated to these 17. The article mentioned 2400+ ...is that standard procedure to give them DOD ID cards to learn a language? Can they not teach this in an auxiliary location off base or post so they do not HAVE to have access to military installations? There are certainly enough vacate army and air force installations that were closed under the Clinton admin that could serve that purpose and more effectively provide better National Security.

Bowie...you might be right about the special compensation to the one who received US residency. I hope they checked out his intel before they promised him anything.

This is old news. They are all in prison now. And those ID cards are no big deal. They don't give you access to anything.
