San Antonio solid waste won't take styrofoam. I hate to send it to the landfill. I have quite a bit from large crate.

Anyone know of someplace that recycles it.

You can try to call here: Randolph Recycling Program call 652-4668 or 652-5606
they do recycling around holidays, but he might know where to go at other times.

Chop it up into small pieces and throw it in the garbage.

If it has the recycle logo on it, I just throw it in the blue trash. They have never failed to take it.

It does have the symbol but the website says:

Plastics: Labeled #1 through #7 (no styrofoam). Look for the recycling symbol on the bottom. Remove lids and rinse any remaining food or liquids from containers or trays. Examples include: beverage bottle, shampoo and lotion bottles, meat trays, condiment bottles, prescription and medicine bottles. Please do not place recyclable items in plastic bags. We do not take plastic bags

I put some out before we had the big bins and they left it in the container.

And in typical fashion it contradicts itself. Arent meat trays styrofoam?

hmmm... well, #6 plastic IS polystyrene (which includes "Styrofoam"). i guess they should say "1-7, except for 6" if they don't take polystyrene. i've pretty much put anything that has a recycling symbol in the blue bin (except for plastic bags, and whatever is listed on the "do not place in blue cart" list).

Hmmm. At a recent neighborhood meeting, the city's recycling coordinator, Maria Blake (maria.blake@sanantonio.gov) said that certain types of styrofoam were acceptable. The rule of thumb was that if it had the symbol and could be broken cleanly (i.e. it doesn't crumble), that it was acceptable to put in the bins.
