I'm moving to SA and need your advice on TV and internet providers.

I don't need many channels, just the basic ones. I'm going to order Direct TV, the 29.99/month package. Is it good, i.e. the service, signal, the easiness of canceling and etc?
For the internet, I need a high speed one, as I'd love to watch movies online. How is Time Warner's standard road runner? It seems they just raised their price.

I'd appreciate your inputs and suggestions!

I don't have personal experience with Roadrunner, but as far as DirecTV, the $29.99/month promotional pricing requires a 2-year contract. At the end of 1 year, the price goes up to the normal price for that package, which is currently $53.99/month. DirecTV is currently running a promotion that will let you add HD channels to that package at no extra charge. Haven't had experience with their HD service, but the consensus is that their HD picture quality is about as good as it gets. I can tell you their SD picture quality, however, leaves something to be desired.

Some areas in San Antonio also have services available from Grande Communications. Grande Communications – Digital Cable TV, High-Speed Internet and Local and Long Distance Telephone Service

Correction: it's actually $58.99/month currently.

To answer the question about ease of cancellation with Directv, since you are on a contract there is an early termination fee of $20 per month times the remaining months. Of course once that contract is up it is easy to cancel, however Directv will require you send the boxes back. If you dont, you will get hit with a fee of around $400 per box.

....but I dont know why anyone would cancel

I'm with you on this. I am so happy I made the switch to Direct TV. TW is right up there with HEB in my "I hate you" category. I have Direct and Clear for my internet and couldn't be more pleased.

I even like the dish on my house. Mostly because it probably irritates the hell out of my jerk neighbor. One out of 8 in the cul-de-sac ain't bad.

two years contact with $58.99/month for the second year is too much for me. I don't need many channels. Maybe Time Warner's the internet/tv bundle is a better idea, $69.00/month for 70 tv channels and standard road runner internet. What do you guys think about Time Warner's service?

I love my TW service. I have had a few issues mostly centered around their new Cisco DVR which has bugs.

The internet is always very fast and almost never goes down.

I have had Directv in the distant past and had customer service issues. I also have a problem since I have too many tv sets. I have standard cable stations on most sets but have 2 dvrs for my main tvs. I don't want a box at every tv. TW gives the local HD stations to all tvs, no box necessary.

You might consider Dish Network's America's Top 120 package for $39.99/month (current regular price). It doesn't have as many channels as DirecTV's $58.99 package, but it pretty much has the basics (local channels, A&E, History, Discovery, TLC, TNT, USA, etc.). It has the same first year promotional pricing at $24.99/month. They also offer free HD channels with that package.

Thanks ged_782! I'm checking Dish Network right now. It seems a reasonable package.
how about the internet? any suggestion? I'm considering standard road runner or Clear...

I live in Penn. The internet and tv are much cheaper here.

Time Warner Roadrunner and AT&T DSL are the most widely available internet services in San Antonio. Clear is a newcomer to the party. AT&T also offers their U-verse internet & TV service in many San Antonio neighborhoods (mostly North Side), and as I mentioned in a previous post, Grande Communications offers service in some parts of San Antonio.

At&T DSL is offered in four download speeds, ranging from 768Kbps to 6.0Mbps. Monthly non-promotional pricing ranges from $19.95 to $40, when bundled with a landline. I think it's $5 more per month without the landline.
