I read a lot about Austin being a fit city and having lots of outdoor recreation opportunites. How does San Antonio compare? I don't think Austin is for me because of other reasons the town just doesn't appeal to me. I want to live in an area that has opportunities for good biking, running, health food stores, etc. What differences and similarites do you notice between in this area? Thanks.

I can't compare to Austin because I don't live there. Plenty of parks/walking trails, bike trails are becoming more common, pools, rivers/lakes, adult soccer/softball/baseball leagues by the plentiful. Health food stores exist but not a whole bunch of them. Like Austin, the weather is great here and you can do outdoor stuff for pretty much the whole year.

Is there something more specific that you are looking for?

Mainly walking, jogging, biking trails. Some maybe around some small lakes as well as periodic kayaking.

I have seen plenty of bikes in SA, but also in Austin. There are a few more in Austin and it seems that there are a few more trails to jog on in Austin but both have health stores etc....There are things to do but during the height of the summer you have got to be die hard for anything not water related. SA does have fewer lakes so it is more of a journey to do boating, kayaking etc.

Medina Lake is not a far drive and OP Snabel park(NW side) has great trails for biking, walking, jogging. I shop at Sun Harvest because it is closer and cheaper than Whole Foods. They have two locations. NW and North. I have never been but a few of my friends frequent Paradise Canyon. http://www.paradisecanyon.com/images/pcbrochure.pdf
I have never been to Govt. Canyon, but it looks like they have trails too.
TPWD: Government Canyon State Natural Area

There is plenty to do outdoors. IMO is not as popular as it is in Austin.

From the little that I know about Austin,
one thing that I've noticed is that they support small businesses big time.
So there's a lot of area where people can from store to store walking or on bicycle.

In San Antonio, you have to fill up your tank before you go from one store to another one.

John James park on Rittiman has trails, including one along Salado Creek that goes a good ways. There is also horseback riding in the area.
