No wonder that they cannot catch contaminations and issue recalls when the problem is still small.
They say that:
CFSAN, in conjunction with the Agency's field staff, is responsible for promoting and protecting the public's health by ensuring that the nation's food supply is safe, sanitary, wholesome, and honestly labeled, and that cosmetic products are safe and properly labeled.
There are over 377,000 registered food facilities (including approximately 154,000 domestic facilities and 223,000 foreign facilities) that manufacture, process, pack, or hold food consumed by humans or animals in the United States and several thousand cosmetic firms.
How many people are employed by FDA and in what areas do they work?

Now tell me how those few people can possible be thorough checking this wast number of food facilities? For me, it seems like this is a very random hit and miss sampling, pretty far from "ensuring that the nation's food supply is safe, sanitary and wholesome".
I've come to the conclusion that biggest beneficiaries of most governmental agencies, at any level, are the people employed by them, not the public.

Have you ever tried to catch the hogs that live in the Black Forest? Man, those suckers can run!

If you are talking about this latest egg recall, it is my understanding that none of the HEB eggs were involved. Most of their eggs are from Texas. Just ate some this morning. Nice and runny. Feel fine.

Your sarcasm detector is in need of repair. Blaming Wal-mart ( or using it as an excuse to stop shopping there, as if Wal-mart choreographed the listeria outbreak ) just seems as ridiculous as what I said about HEB and the egg situation.

Besides, I quit HEB months ago. Except for dire emergencies.
