Well we are loving Bulverde! At night we have this really loud chirping sound coming from the trees (I think), we were at the Sonic last night and they have it too. It's not crikets--we have them in Illinois. Just curius if anybody knew what they were. They get very loud and it souds like there are lots of the little fella's! Also, have seen snakes twice while out walking the Bulverde Hills----FREAKING OUT!!!! I notice people walking here carrying long sticks--I thought it was incase of stray dogs---IS IT TO BEAT OFF SNAKES????? One was actually in a brand new drive and it was fat and long and it raised it's head at me and my dog--eewwww... It was black and like grey spotted. The other was smaller and hubby said a garden snake---ewwww.... I love walking the hills but I am terrified of these dang things. I have seen 4 teranchilas here too (not afraid of them), they were about 3 to 4 inches wide. We removed alot of shrubbery around perimeter of our home and I think we stirred them up. We have the cutes green gecko's too! So cute and they are not really afraid. OMG, we have deer (love them) and we have a doe with triplets that is in our yard a lot. I just want to hug them... So CUTE! Love my deer!

katydids (sp?) are the creatures making the loud noises. We have an unusually large infestation of them this year.

Cicada - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

We also called them Katydids, which I suppose is the wrong name, but that's what most people still call them, I think.....

Edit:
Maybe I am naming the wrong insects...the noise makers are definitely Cicada, but there are also KAtydids, apparently, which are different...

There was a front page article a couple days ago about the unusual outbreak of the katydis in the hill country. They are very annoying right now but might die out in a couple weeks. My little dog is chewing up about 5 a day and bring them to our back patio... gross! lol

Cicadas are a common June infestation - and what I thought the noise was. However, the unusual loud sound is from katydids! I was surprised to hear that! They are green grasshoppers. The Cicadas are the big beetle like bugs. We have both and it is very loud!

I have no idea if that's why - I had thought it was dogs or just self defense. We see snakes every now and then were I live too. I see really big dead snakes on Evan's Rd all the time. No one I know has been bit by one though. They can freak me out too - but I just stay away from them

I know some folks walk with sticks or golf clubs to use incase a dog gets aggressive on their walk. Maybe that is the reason they carry theirs. I know I have been on a walk where a dog that had obviously gotten out of the yard and was "protecting" the front of the house was agressive enough that I WISH I had a stick with me...

Hi,

Welcome to the Hill Country.

Wait until you have a Firefly outbreak. It is amazing and beautiful seeing all of these little lights flitting amoung the trees starting at sunset and continuing all night sometimes.

It always reminds me of "A Midsummer's Night Dream." A bunch of fairies flitting about. BEAUTIFUL.

You are in for a treat if you have never seen one.

The cicadas and crickets are annoying but I would love to see the fireflies - that would be great and I'm sure my son would have fun catching (and releasing) them... I guess that is only once in a blue moon though? I'm from the NE and used to seeing them - but I don't think I've seen any fireflies since I've been here (almost 3 years now). I know some of these things are cyclical - like all those moths/butteflies that were around a few months ago - that was crazy.
