Just heard on radio of a plan to have a 3rd can for organics! and it will be green. I have seen people load the blue can up with grass many of times so maybe this will be a good thing for those that don't already compost, unless it has to sit there for 2 weeks.

I was serious about the large openings under hinge area of these cans. Stopping these up will help control the fly problem that I don't recall having with twice / week pick up.

I really don't see myself driving through a neighborhood looking for my dream home and seeing garbage cans in front of everyone's garage doors as a selling point. "Honey, I love what they've done with the perfectly manicured yard, but what really sets that house apart is the big blue recycle bin."
Don't drive around any of the historic neighborhoods then. Lots of gorgeous fancy houses on large lots, where the lots really don't have *any* area hidden from view from the street, and you can see the bins on a number of properties. it's really not the end of the world. I think people in the HOA-neighborhoods worry about this a lot more than those in the houses with covered front porches with rocking chairs, maintained hedges, white picket fences, etc.... They're there, but hardly noticeable unless you're looking.

We don't have an HOA and our historic association doesn't care about them at this point. Our bins are near the back of the lot (corner lot), near the garage which is more of a former carriage house than garage, behind the compost, behind some trees. They are visible from the street, but then the whole lot is.
