I hope every parent at Brandeis holds their kid a little tighter tonight. Jeez, I hope and pray I would be able to get my child help if they were so distraught that this was the only solution they could come up with. I've never known anyone that committed suicide....aren't there signs to look for? I don't know....I'm sure the parents are devastated, but I would be questioning myself forever over something like this. Maybe it was just something very sudden? RIP poor girl......I'm so sad to read about things like this.

I don't know that there is anything sadder than a child that doesn't want to live.

Had a friend in high school commit suicide and then a friend from high school who committed suicide about 10 years after graduating and a parent of a friend. I've never understood why. No signs or anything....absolutely bone chilling to me...

Not just Brandeis parents, but all parents should do as Sapphire suggests!

Saph, we used to be trained on the possible warning signs of suicide when I was in the military, and I still carry a card with those that are most prominent; but truth be told there are not always indicators!

Just look at Denver Broncos wide receiver Kenny McKinley who shot himself two days ago. Teammates say he was happy and joking not long beforehand, and there were no signs of trouble. His old roommate even said he was afraid of guns, but he used one to end his life.

I just hope some good can come of this, that being that parents talk to this kids about suicide. My son is only a year younger than this girl, and I have told him several times that there are things in life that will bring him down; but suicide is never a solution. There are always other options.

Maybe if if this subject were discussed more often, those contemplating taking their lives will realize it doesn't solve anything.

My heart and prayers go out to the girl's family, friends and classmates. Amongst their grief, they will always have questions that will never be answered...

Yes, I've talked to my son several times about it.....and then I wonder "Did I just plant a seed?" It's a terrifying subject. My son, of course, has assured me he would never do anything like that, and I, of course, want to believe that. That doesn't mean I've let my "guard" down. Like majormadmax, I wish it was not such a taboo topic. "We" really should talk about it--in the home, in school, in church, in youth groups--wherever teens congregate and can bounce ideas, questions, concerns, etc. off each other. It's just inconceivable to me that there seems to be no better solution for people. I don't know how, as a parent, you would ever recover from this.

We always told our daughter during rough times while she was growing up "suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem". My daughter experienced the suicide grief when the son of a popular family (and her classmate's older brother) in our town committed suicide at age 16 OVER A GIRL.

My prayers go out to this family.

Suicide across the life span ... - Google Books

growing up in Plano, TX (see above link) we dealt with this in the 80s. I remember really the attention from all the media outlets then.
Everytime I hear of one, it makes me think of this and I hope it's not a trend as crazy as that sounds.

When life serves up the most devestating and seemingly hopeless times there is one thing and one thing only that will make things better. Time. Time heals all wounds. Suicide takes the one thing away that would make things better. Time. Once you take that step, times up. Nothing is so bad that time, eventually, will not make it seem like a distant memory. Suicide ends all chances of recovery.
