In other countries, such as in Venezuela, that Chinese company would have to give the government 33 cents for every $1 of oil that they get (royalties = taxes).

I bet they'll only have to pay the government 1 cent per $1 of oil.

Actually, there's been a steep increase in the royalty payments ever since the Permian Basin area recently exploded with a new drilling technique. Payments now range anywhere from $1500-$4500 per acre, which is sometimes a lot more than some of the land in S. Texas is worth.

They may be asking for profits, but that is not where that will end.

The other problem with China is they don't let us invest in jack over there. They refuse to allow the US to do what the US has been allowing them to do for a while now, and that isn't right. FREE trade only when it is FAIR trade...
Over 50,000 USA based companies have a presence in China and do business there. Many of them huge multinational corporations like Nike and GM. Essentially what these companies do is exploit the very cheap labor in the PRC so they can reap massive profits in the West. How is this not allowing any investment?

Express-News business columnist David Hendricks thinks this is a good idea.

S. Texas shouldembrace China'sshale investment

Quote:
The world desperately needs China to develop its own shale gas fields, estimated to hold more than 900 trillion cubic feet. China needs the gas to generate electricity instead of burning more of the highly pollution soft coal it uses now.
I'm not sure that his column made the connection between the project and this benefit clear, though.

A Norwegian company also made a huge stake. I found the following tidbits interesting.

It first mentions the US selling natural gas to Europe as a competitor to Russia which currently corners the market.

Quote:
According to the Eurasia Group's Robert Johnston, it could signal a significant shift from the U.S. being seen as an importer of liquefied natural gas, to one that is ultimately an exporter.
China will learn a new technology.

Quote:
The attraction for CNOOC, which doesn't have any onshore natural gas reserves in China, is that the company learns about multi-zone fracking technology.

It's possible this knowledge may be applied to opportunities in other parts of the globe, which may include Canada and/or Australia.

There was also mention of natural gas vehicles and this...

Quote:
Still, the deals that continue to be done are evidence of a mindset that continues to believe that natural gas will be the fuel of choice in the coming years -- and companies want to make sure they get in on the game at what are fire sale prices.

Not only that but if push came to shove any nation can expatriate assets. They lose everything they invest that is physically here.
