So, today I called Lackland and voluntered to host 2 basic trainees on Thanksgiving day ... Just thought I would share the information incase anyone else is interested in signing up... I really feel bad for these young people, many who are away from home for the first time and are probably really missing the feeling of family around them...

From the info I was given today...

* Host families must pick up and drop off trainees
* Pick up time is between 7-8am and drop off is between 5-6pm
* Host families must live no further than 30miles from Lackland... Depending on which way you go we live apx 30.1 miles - 32 miles from Lackland... I promised the Sgt. we would drive the 30.1 mile way and she was okay with that, LoL...
* If going out to eat the host family pays for the trainees...
* I was offered either 1 or 2 trainees, I took 2...

If anyone else is interested in opening your home for Thanksgiving please call Operation Homecooking at Lackland AFB at 671-5453...

That is a great thing you are doing for these basic trainees.

The drop-off time should be later so that they can stick around for the 2nd round of turkey!

Are you only looking for Army soldiers, or just servicemembers?

If the latter, Lackland has a program for basic trainees. The program is called Operation HOMECOMING, and a thread has already be started on it.

Ft Sam has a program called Mission Thanksgiving run by the U.S. Army Medical Department Center & School. I couldn't find any current info but if you call that organization, they should be able to help you. There was also an article on the program in the Bandera Bulletin and the author provided her number if readers needed more info. She also stated that the deadline is 15 November.

And of course you can try BAMC or WHMC, as well as the Fisher House on both Ft Sam or Lackland, to see if they have similar programs going.

Good luck, and thanks for doing something special for our troops!

Cheers! M2

Wow! Thanks for all the info. Sorry I didn't search for a previous thread. I always forget to do that!
We're not particular. We would love to have any serviceperson. My dad was a career Air Force pilot who did basic training at Lackland in the late 40's so that might be a good place to start.
We won't discriminate tho!
Thanks again!!!
