I love these little traditions that unite our whole city in the same spirit. Food has a way of doing that.

True and I'm not going to call it a dialect.

I also agree with the other sentiments here that pre-packaged H.E.B. tamales are nasty.

H.E.B. has awesome lunch meats and cheeses from their own deli, the best part is watching them slice it and package it for you, gives me that old time butcher feeling.

I have never considered to try their tamales and never will as long as someone in my family is still homemaking them. They are considered difficult to make as far as how long one must prepare them and watch over them as they cook. Any restaurant will attempt to make this process more expedient so some of that magic abuelita puts into them, knowing they are made mainly for their family, will be lost.

I did grow up with from those from the molina though so know they are not bad at all in some cases but I refuse to stand in line either for tamales or The Cowboy Breakfast.

Spoiler
Southern American English is a group of dialects as much as the many Spanish dialects spoken in the US and throughout the world. The view of a an average outsider when it comes to either of these cultures is, I guess, understandably going to disagree with the opinion of academic linguists whose profession is classifying and categorizing dialects. It does degrade these cultures to an extent but since it is not intentional and more based on anti-intellectual opinion there is no harm just a lack of awareness.

Some are simply in comfortable habitation with their own immediate culture to recognize any others and there is really nothing wrong with that except that others more well versed in such matters will recognize that their opinion is less scholastic, more based on stereotypes, and perhaps even politically biased.

The prepared tamales at HEB (at least the De Zavala) HEB aren't too bad. If you can't find a friend of a friend of a friend (like me...or someone DM me so I don't have to buy them at HEB) they're a good option.

You basically add the "es" to the word. Somewhere along the line, when talking about a single one, people have dropped just the "s" and called it a tamale (tam-al-ee) which, apparently, is wrong.
Bayless is correct. It IS "tamal" with the plural being "tamales."

866 West Mayfield Boulevard, San Antonio, TX 78211-3026

my husband's secretary used to bring them to him all the time....and would never tell where she got them for the longest time. He's been deployed for months now so I haven't had any recently, but now I want to make the drive over there!!
