I remember when El Norteño was on South Flores St. in the early 80's. So they have been around for a while.

Lots of memories. My grandfather had a TV repair shop right in front of it and he also relocated to South Presa. My mother used to sell raspas to students after the school down the block let out.

I just found out there will be a tamale festival at the pearl brewery for the first time this year. There is also going to be a tamale contest.

Deadline for the tamale contest is November 22nd. $1,000 cash prize, not bad.

I am definitely going to the Tamale Festival next Saturday. Hopefully I can get some names of people so I don't have to hunt tamales down every Xmas. There are BOATLOADS of people on craigslist that are advertising homemade tamales for Christmas Eve--but I have no idea about those folks and a personal reference is always best.

Just go down Hackberry street. You're bound to crash into a molino of some kind that advertises tortillas and tamales on the outside of the building. There's no reason to obsess over Rubens tamales when there's other places that sell them.

They are offering free lessons in how to make tamales on Saturday the 11th at 11 am.

La Gran Tamalada

I'd rather trust a molino than anyone advertising homemade ones, be it through craiglist or word of mouth. The molino at least is accountable to code compliance and has to make them decent enough for return business, while someone making them at home to turn a buck to stretch their budget might not care either way.

Of course homemade is the best when made by family for family and since many are made at once they occasionally will sell by the dozen too but they won't be advertising to strangers.

As is there is not a huge profit to make unless they are skimping on something here or there. All masa and little filling is a sign of a bad tamale.

The best tamales I ever eaten are Louisiana tamales. I wish that someone from Louisiana would open a tamale place here.

Have any of you had any from Papasitos? On the way home the past few days I've noticed them advertising tamales. I don't want to buy them if they aren't good.
