You can't dictate how people respond to you here. I have nothing else to contribute to this thread. I work with people who want to argue all day and I'm done.

But seriously, you should stick around, lots of good topics and decent people.

Default Meaning,

+= it is OK to stay if the leak source was cut off. A very straightforward
answer.

Ummm....I think the issue here is that you were so concerned w/the safety of your folks that you overlooked his basic issue - the stove pilot light was leaking, the stove was turned off - so that should have resolved the leak. From there, he was wondering why they WOULDN'T be able to stay, since the leak had been stopped.

You honestly misread it - and HCHRM is usually very ready to give good answers - so personally, I think you at least "owe" him a "oops" for going off on what really was a good question - he was trying to figure out why you'd still be concerned about it, if the leak was stopped.

Had you replied back about the issue of residual gas, I've no doubt that he'd have suggested "airing" the house for maybe 20-30 minutes. Even that would likely be overkill - it takes quite a bit of gas for it to be dangerous, and just the dispersal between the gas being shut off and you finding out about it likely negated any possible harmful residual.
