Parking near ALAMO and other history sites to see nearby? (Houston: apartment, condos)

I'm giving a friend a little tour of the area (she just moved here). She's a history buff and therefore I want to show her the Alamo, the Menger Hotel and of course the San Fernando Cathedral. I don't venture downtown much, so I'm still kind of new to the parking situation and tourist areas.


Where's a good place to park near the Alamo?

What other historical sites are there to see nearby without having to drive?

And lastly...are there any good restaurants with a decent vegetarian menu?

We usually park at the Rivercenter, it's an easy walk through the mall to the Alamo, down to the Riverwalk, over to the Menger.

Can't help with the vegetarian menus though...I am a happy carnivore! But I am sure most restaurants in the area offer herbivore choices!

Me and my buds are huge carnivores that feast on BBQ and Tex-Mex in our sleep...and here comes this lil sweet thing and throws a monkey wrench in my eating habits lately :/

If she's a history buff, then you need to take her on the Missions Trail as we have found it to be extremely interesting.

And if she's really into history, you need to take her by the Gunter Hotel as it was the location where blues guitarist Robert Johnson recorded some of his best work (http://www.robertjohnsonfilm.com/RecSess.html - broken link)!

The Missions Trail is gonna be great! As for parking, there's some right next to the Alamo, just pass the Alamo and then make a right on Houston, there's some metered parking right there across from the Emily Morgan. Whether or not it'll be free is another question entirely.

There's also some more parking across I-37 by Sunset Station, across the street from Ruth's Chris Steakhouse & by the San Antonio Parking Council or whatever the heck it's called, it's right on Commerce by the railroad tracks.

Rivercenter parking can get pricey. The last few times we went downtown, we parked in a lot across the street from Rivercenter. $5 and the lot is tended, so the car is safer.

I always park at the parking lot across the street from the Federal building facing Alamo Plaza. Go down Alamo street past the Alamo, just past Houston street, and its right there. As far as sights to see within walking distance, Main plaza and Military Plaza are right there by San Fernando.....the Governors Palace is right there as well. The History Shop on Houston street has some cool stuff to look at as well. Lots more to see around the area, but you need a car or a cab to get to......

Park behind the Bonham Exchange on the street near the Emily hotel. There are only parking meters. You don't have to feed them on Sundays.

I love the parking meters in town. And is it true that you don't need to pay if you have a hybrid or an electric car?! That's so awesome.

just discovered that some of the newer apartment/condos in town have electric car charge zones
