Where are some good soul food (good down home cookin') restaurants in San Antonio? I heard Dallas has a lot of barbeque joints. Are there any decent ones here?

BBQ isn't a standard here in SA. Rudy's is great and authentic up on the far north side. otherwise, there's a few hidden bbq joints spread around the east and west sides. new one on east Houston by downtown would be a good place to start.

As for Soul Food, try MK Davis on North Flores.

Mama Lee's Soul Food Restaurant, Soul Food. San Antonio, TX.

It's owned by two retired Air Force guys I went through TAP class with and they're really good people. They were reviewed in the Taste section of the EN a couple weeks ago and the review basically said "just go there". I'm sure they were quite happy with the review. Only down side is they are currently only serving lunch (except Sunday), but this is mostly due to their popularity.. They are getting ready to expand though, so hopefully dinner will be in the near future.

BTW, my office eats there at least once/week..

It is goooooooooooooooddddddddd stuff! We went there from the hospital once...Loved it! They do (did?) have short hours during the weekday, but I can see why...they sell out of everything so darn fast with their lunch crowd!

Someone said they were open on Sundays for after church...and it was VERY busy!

I just looked at their menu Soul Food Restaurant, Soul Food. San Antonio, TX. and it says they're open 4-7 on M-F now.. I called to see if that's a new thing or a typo, but nobody answered the phone, so they might not be open today because Thanksgiving was yesterday. I'll make sure to ask some of the experts I work with on Monday. They always know everything about them and also pay a good portion of their salary

BTW, I've personally never been there. I just always see everyone in the office start salivating whenever that name is mentioned..

There are a few Soul Food restaurants out on W.W. White Rd. on the Eastside of town. I went with a friend to one a few years back, I believe it was called Mr. & Mr's G's (?). It was around lunchtime and the place was packed with blue-collar and white-collar folks-- meaning mucho GOOD food.

Mr. & Mrs. G's is very good also. I live close to there but work close to Mama Lees. I wasn't aware of Mama Lees but I am going to try them out next week for sure. Their menu sounds great. Thanks for the tip.

Their menu looks soooo good. We will definitely check it out. BTW, I'm retired Navy so I'm all about supporting former military.
