I am applying for a nursing program, and was going to apply for both. I always hear alot about UTHSCSA but not the incarnate word. How do these two compare? Is the nursing program better at UT health science center? I am not from san antonio, so I am not really familiar with the incarnate word. I know the cost of Incarnate word is higher, but that is not really an issue, I would just like to know how the programs compare.
Any opinions from former students would be nice. Thanks!

The following article is not much to go on but you are welcome to it.

Quote:
The School of Nursing was established by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in 1931. It was the first accredited school of nursing west of the Mississippi River to offer a baccalaureate degree and remains one of the most successful nursing programs in the region.

UIW completes nursing school expansion, will unveil new name | San Antonio Business Journal

UTHSCSA has more medical offerings than a nursing degree program including being a research facility that makes headlines from time to time. As far as locations I think you would like UIW better but can you really judge a school by the neighboring scenery instead of what it academically has to offer? On that front I am unsure which school has a better nursing program but I would imagine UIW would not have one that suffers in the least. One difference is that UTHSCSA can offer a doctorate in nursing while UIW can offer up to a Masters but soon that will change and they will have a doctorate program as well.

Caveat: I work at UTHSCSA.

I see the biggest advantage going to UTHSCSA because it's a full health sciences university. You have the opportunity to work across professions throughout your educational career - you work alongside med students, dental students, etc., as well as with other nurses.

I would go for a tour for both schools and see which one you feel at home with. Hope you are able to make a better decision after that, unless you have already.
Some schools do have funds reserved for students from out of state who want to visit the school and have been accepted if that's the case for you.

Agreed with skeet - the schools are very different, and which one is best for you just depends on you!
