HEB Plus! on Potranco to host Farmer's Market (appointed, home)

H-E-B hasn't moved its produce outside, but is hosting its first farmer's market from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. About 15 vendors will participate, selling a variety of food that includes squash, tomatoes, melons and beans.

"It's a direct sell (for) the vendors; we are not getting anything out of it, but just donating parking lot space and investing in the local growers," said Hugh Topper, H-E-B's vice president of produce procurement.

H-E-B will host subsequent farmer's markets at the same location on July 28 and August 25. And beginning in September, the market will be held every second Saturday of each month at the same time.

I read this in the paper today and think it's great! I plan on going. And I think it's a nice move on a huge business like HEB to allow people to set up and sell goods (that HEB also sells in the store) in the parking lot.

I think it's great! Since moving here a year ago, I've been disappointed that there weren't any farmer's markets or road-side stands (not the tailgate of a pickup!). I think this is a positive move on HEB's part. Of course, you're going to go IN the store to pick up a few things there as well!

hmm, bad time to read this thread...

so how was it? and I'm VERY glad it happened at HEB+ and not that other large (ugly) grocery store thing on Potranco... they really don't tend to care about the local community anyhow

It was actually not too bad. About half a dozen different people out there selling green beans, zucchini, cucumbers, squash, eggplant, tomatoes, peaches... I picked up some tomatoes, peaches, and green beans--all picked yesterday. Oh how I wish I had a home with a bigger yard so I could garden again. *sigh*

so were the prices OK? or were they more on the premium side?

I used to have a huge garden growing up and pretty much ate out of it all summer long. I have a big enough yard for a medium sized garden, but I don't think this is the kind of soil that can be tilled (rocks). Would be nice though and would save me a lot of money at the store.

Let's see...I paid $3 for a basket of beans (my family of 4 will probably have enough for 3 meals)....$5 for about 6-7 peaches...$5 for 6-7 tomatoes. Sorry don't remember how many peaches and tomatoes were in a basket because DH and the kids have already had a few. ;-)

I don't pay attention much to prices of fruits and veggies since my family just about eats nothing but that. And maybe these people were a little higher than what was inside HEB? I don't know I'm not a good price-comparison shopper. I just feel that helping out the little guy is a good thing to do.

Just do square foot gardening. I did this and have so many fruits and vegetables that I don't know what to do with it. My backyard is the size of postage stamp too.

I prefer to not support the big guy or the small guy and would rather keep all the money to myself
