Also, the open positions are probably included in the budget. So when that anticipated spending is cut, the projected budget is lowered.

The jobs were filled at one time but as they became vacanct, the position was not filled with a replacement.

Not too hard to figure out...

Just do me a favor. If y'all don't like the Governor and realize what he is truly all about - please don't vote for him again in the next election.... get out there and take a stand.... please....

I don't ever vote along party lines like my parents do. I'm smart enough to figure out what a turd smells like on my own.

He says it's not his fault that schools have to fire teachers. He believes there are enough staff who do not work in the classroom who can be fired to balance school budgets.

Except that he is completely wrong. Per TEA, every non teaching job could be cut and it still wouldn't be enough to balance the budgets.

For Perry to say otherwise means he is either ignorant or he doesn't care.

I saw his comments yesterday and I wrote and mailed my letter to him immediately after. Just because he says it, doesn't make it true. It is very irresponsible of him. If the state didn't withhold money from the school districts then the schools would have money to pay staff. How does he expect the districts to pay for teachers when he withholds millions each year that is due to them?
Meanwhile, the state will be paying $90 million to implement the new STAAR testing program that will replace TAKS. They could delay it and use that 90 mil to keep teachers. Instead the state is choosing to increase spending on Film industry and recruiting businesses to the state.

Ok.....stopping before I get all crazy......

In 1949 the Gilmer-Aiken Act established that public education would be funded 80% by the state of Texas and 20% by local citizens. This level is nowhere near what the state funds now...the current average is 44% by the state and 56% by local citizens, though that depends on the school district. Our short-sighted governor took a gamble despite objections from the State Comptroller and now he says the state is not letting any teachers go. No...he's correct...I'm a school principal and I had to tell the teachers that they would not have a job next year. Would have liked to have had Perry there to do that for me for sure...
