Is that just me? Am I still a young naive parent?
It really depends on the school and on the individual child. My daughter who's in kindergarten gets a homework packet on Monday and has all week to do it. She's usually done with it by the time she gets off the bus on Monday afternoon. Her teacher even started giving her twice as much since she was finishing so fast, and she's still done by the time she gets off the bus.

My older child used to spend two or three hours a night doing homework, to the point where if we had a doctor's appointment or other plans in the afternoon and she got behind by a day, there was no way to catch up. Then I got Netflix and told her she could watch a movie every day if she was done with her homework by 4:30. Now, most days she's done by 4.

I don't have a problem going to talk to the teachers if there's an unfair amount of work assigned...I want my kids to have at least an hour of outdoor playtime a day, especially since their school only has PE every other day. I can't even imagine trying to fit in after school activities like dance class or karate. But so far there hasn't been too much work, my older daughter just drags her tail unless she has a good reason to work quickly.

People actually think that schools and teachers should provide supplies for the students? Wow.

I've only been out of high school for 8 years, but I don't remember supplies being THAT expensive for the basics (paper, pens, pencils, basic calculator and some folders). I always went to Walmart the night before classes started and spent less than $20 and it lasted most of the year.
