And as far as the rainy day fund, the legislature hasn't officially gone into it yet. The Budget hasn't passed yet.
SCUISD can get away with that because there's almost no crime in that area.
But try doing that in the inner city to see what happens

Cuts have already started at South San ISD even with Math teachers!
Edit to add: The teachers last day will be at the end of the school year.

Math teachers? Are they laying off any teacher across the board or the probationaries?

each district will have their own criteria. NISD is doing 1st and 2nd year teachers first. Doesn't matter the content area.

My better half works at NISD and has for about 20+ years. She tells me that they are not going to be laying off teachers at all. What they will be doing is moving teachers from schools where they will be increasing the class sizes, into the new schools opening next year. Coaches will be carrying classes now. She said they have fired nobody and probably won't. They are just not replacing people that are retiring and those leaving for better paying jobs. The school districts have a lot of areas that they cut into far before firing anybody. NISD spends more than a cool million a year on just travel. They send all coaches to an annual seminar that costs the taxpayer about $500. a coach. They send other teaching groups to seminars at great expense to the taxpayer. To me, it seems like for folks that are supposed to be so superior in intelligence, that they haven't figured it out that they could send one person who would take notes, come back and do the presentation here. Kinda DUH! And having folks on the payroll who do nothing but travel out of state looking for teachers seems pretty stupid too. I wonder if they know that Texas has colleges that produce teachers? Do you have any clue about the millions that is being spent to design new schools? I can assume they are too stupid to come up a modular design that would be easily added onto or portions left off. But no, they have to redesign a complete new school for every one they build at a cost of millions just for the design. And what's with all of the architectural details on these schools? There are millions being spent on architectural details that do nothing but make the buildings LOOK better. These are not schools folks. These are monuments to the administrations and make cool pics for their resumes. Don't believe all of the propaganda generated by these superior thinking dimwits. They have LOTS of room to make cuts and not fired anyone.

how about "keep the best teachers and layoff the mediocre teachers"
I guess that would happen in a perfect World.

The "millions" spent on design would be there regardless if a prototype was used or not. You can't just plop a rectangular building on a square site - it has to be site adapted. The shape and topography of a property earmarked for a school varies too much to just go with a standard plan. The location of utility lines varies from site to site. Trust me, NISD already standardizes a lot of the "design". In fact, the roof details are exactly the same from school to school. Besides, the amount spent in design at the beginning is small compared to the total construction cost. If you consider life-cycle cost, a better design may actually be cheaper.

You may disagree, but to call them "dimwits" does nothing to further your argument. Perhaps some examples that can be debated would be helpful.

I agree. It's a bummer those 7 (I believe that's what was said) will be losing their positions. But I can remember going to Clark in the early 2000s and having 2 maybe 3 officers at any given time. I cannot even imagine today not having an officer there.
