This year I suddenly have an invasion of what looks like small, fattish roach type insects with wings, very light colored, that seem to be coming in through the screens of my windows. The exterminator is coming out to spray on Tues, but I was wondering, are these really roaches??? I'm not too familiar with the habits of roaches, but do they come in through the window screens? I mean, I shut the windows and put on the A/C, and can see several on the insides of my screens right now. Icky AND weird.

Do a Google search for subterranean termites. Look at the pics of the termites with wings. This is the season for termites to swarm. They'll get really active after a rain or a good ground watering. Hopefully, this is not what you saw but it's something that happens here every year about this time. If you do indeed have termintes, shop around for prices. The chemical cost right at $145.00 a gallon to an applicator. One gallon of chemical makes 100 gallons of treatment. The water is cheap and his spray rig only costs about $3500. So the profit margins are HIGH. If a renewal is offered, know that all the money buys you is an inspection, they are not allowed by the State to respray unless they find active termites- ground pollution is the reason. Make sure you TOTALLY understand what is being done to your house to treat for termites. A good job also includes cutting walls open to spray chemical under tubs and at all plumbing penetrations. If you are a do-it-yourself kinda person, go by any of the Jupe Mills and pick up a bottle of Bifen IT. Read, understand, and follow the instructions on the bottle. It is a termiticide and will kill subterranean termites.

Thanks for the response, but no, these are much shorter and the wings are no longer than their bodies.I just think it's weird they are coming in through the window screens if they are roaches...

OK, I finally figured out what the bugs were. They are woods roaches. They live out in the tree area behind my apt, living on decaying vegetation. I found this out after I went outside on my balcony and noticed quite a few. Seems they liked living under the bamboo mat I had out there, as well as liking the water in my fountain. Also under the rectangular pots we were trying to grow some vegetables in. Needless to say, after a lot of screeching and Raid spraying, throwing the rug over the balcony and bagging up just about everything out there and tossing it, I no longer have a problem with the weird little roach type bugs.L
