Yes it is very walkable. From our house we can get to loads of boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops, bars, the library, baseball/soccer fields, and Marktplatz where most community events are held all within a few blocks. HEB is also walking distance for us. Check Trulia for houses for sale. If you want something small and in-town, I think you can get away with spending under $300K. Unfortunately for home buyers, the recession really has not affected Fredericskburg much if at all. There are also many nice historical houses for rent if you want to go that route. The retired lady across the street from us rents a lovely 1 bedroom house in just PERFECT condition! No idea what the rent is, though.

In 2007/8, I traveled all over the hill country in search for a piece of land to buy. I documented the process extensively and visited almost every small town along the way. It was quite an adventure and was amazed at how beautiful and diverse the region was. Nothing had changed and sprawl is still unheard of.

There's a major difference in tree quality when you go from places like Doss to Harper.
