What is going on here? Is this a new phenomenon or are the news stations just starting to report police officers getting hit?

It's those black uniforms. The old uniforms were ugly but at least you could see them in the dark.

(Of course that doesn't explain how the drunks are missing the whole patrol car and all the flashing lights).

A friend of mine that used to run SWAT said that for some reason, drunks veer left unless there are lights on the road. Then they go towards the lights, as if they're following them. Said the best thing you can ever do if you see someone driving the wrong way is veer to your left and shut off your headlights. Said they saw it all the time.

It's not a matter of not being able to see them. It'd probably be better if they couldn't.

It is called the "Moth Effect" - even sober people will follow tail lights...including cars parked on the side of the highway.
If you have a flat...EXIT the freeway..and change it in a parking lot. If you break down...get away from your car!

Another officer was hit, but there's no telling if the driver was drunk because he or she just took off. SAPD is searching for a dark SUV. This officer was in motion.

I've been wondering this as well. We all know the influence the media can have.
Kids go missing or kidnapped every single day, but no one seems to be up in arms about it. But if the stations contantly reported missing/kidnapped kids every other second, i'm sure something (even if very little) would be done.

We really need a sticky listing nothing but drunk driving incidents in this city. I feel sorry for the people that move here thinking it's a great place to be. Not that it's awful, but it is extremely dangerous and full of some of the most irresponsible people I've ever seen in my life. Seems 90% of the population here just don't care about anything but themselves.

I think that's evident in our entire country. It's the "me" generation. Help ME. Give ME this. Let ME do this.

Screw the effect it has on others.

Part of it is the sensitivty the media has. Over the long term, there are statisitcally no more adductions of children today than over the past 50 years. You wouldn't know it from the news cycle. Also, there were plenty of cases in the past where police knowingly ignored abductions, telling parents in infamous cases that their child probably "ran away" which further contributed to the lack of press.

If you assume that the number of drunks driving on the road is more or less a constant year round --I don't think Fiesta impacts the hardcore alcoholics who drive in a black-out state, they do it often-- then the TIMING by which they have accidents with cops is random. In other words, in the limit some percentage of drunk drivers will hit cops, but when that occurs is not predictable.

Statisitically, truly random events occur in clumpings, they are not spread out evenly, much like airplane crashes. That, in addition to the focus by news media, may explain the "rash" in the past 30 days.
