As far as national chains go, I have good luck with J C Penney. I'm short, and they have a good selection of petite clothes for women of all ages. I'm 57.

I think that 12 to 14 is the average size for all women in general in the U.S. Should be higher for over 50 years, but not sure what it is. Average weights in general have increased steadily in the U.S. for decades due to poor diet and sedentary lifestyles.

I am turning 42 this year but I really don't see my fashion changing by the time I am 50. The stores I like to shop are

White House Black Market
JCPenny
Express (some is very young but some I can definitely wear)
Macys (INC brand)

My wife is 55, size 8-10 depending on the style. She loves Coldwater Creek and Dress Barn (she and my daughter call Dress Barn "the happy store"). She also likes Penney's a lot.
