I am home from college for the summer and I am looking for an inexpensive gym to join while I am home. I am only here until mid-August so I don't want to have to sign any sort of long-ish contracts with a gym, I just need a place to go and lift weights for the time I am home. If anyone can fill me in with suggestions, please do.

If it's a 24 hour gym, even better.

I second Planet Fitness. It's cheap and fits the bill.

Do they have a good variety of free/machine weights? I'm trying to build muscle. So far from looking at photos on their website I've seen mostly treadmills/cardio stuff...

Go for a tour of the facility and see if its right for you.
The only thing I recommend is if you do sign up, use a credit card instead of linking to your checking account because some folks have had trouble canceling and the funds are still taken out from the account. I haven't had the issue but I would recommend a credit card so its easier to get it resolved. You can just call you credit card company if you cancelled aif are still charging your card.

Depends on which location you're at and what time you go. Some are a bit smaller than others. Gping at peak times (like after work hours) machines can get crowded...but I think that happens at all gyms. I'm a fan of Planet Fitness though. I go to the one at San Pedro mostly. I have the Black card and have stopped by the Fredrickburg location a few times just because it was closer. I didn't like the layout as much.

Bally's probably isn't as cheap as a few other places but it is much cheaper than Spectrum and the like. I go to the one at 410 and Bandera, and it has a large variety of free and machine weights. I haven't been to other locations, but I assume they are similar. They do month to month memberships and mine is $23 a month.

Is there a "catch" with Planet Fitness to get the $10 a month rate? (i.e. do you need to sign up for a year, etc.) Do they have a month-to-month option, and if so, what costs for that?
Thanks!
