I would say stay downtown. I'm not sure what price range you're looking for, but I think there are so many hotels downtown that you can find some in the mid $100 range. Anything very close to base is probably in a not-so-great area and without any "night-life" that is safe and clean....

I agree with dmarie123, if you are only going to be in the city for a week then staying down on or near the Riverwalk is the best choice. Lots of hotels, restaurants and bars to choose from; plus the Alamo and other sites of interest.

On Lackland AFB's web site, they show a San Antonio Hotel Guide that may help you find a place within your budget. You want to also check out the Air Force Basic Training web site, it has a list of Graduation Events that you may want to be aware of.

Have fun!

Cheers! M2

DON'T stay at any of the hotels that are within a couple miles of Lackland. The area is not safe at all. However, there is that new hotel that opened at 90/410 and it is supposed to be really nice. It is out in the open and I would think it would be much safer, plus it is brand new and just opened a couple months ago. There are also some new hotels on 151 near SeaWorld and most of them are brand new as well.

I live right across from Lackland AFB and the hotels in the area get reserved pretty quickly during graduation time. You'll be ok staying at one of the hotels as other guests are there for the graduation as well and just be cautious as with any other location during a hotel stay. There are some restaurants that you can easily walk to when you're hungry; usual fast food fare: Taco Bell, Wendy's, etc. You can easily avoid using a car rental and walk to the VIA Transit Center which has two buses (one with many stops and another Express) that will take you directly to downtown. Fare is about $1 and some change. www.viainfo.net for more info. I believe the routes are 75 and 64.

Based on the OP's comments, I think staying along the Riverwalk would better suit them...

Believe you're right, however if cost is an issue then the Best Western at 410/90, or the Days Inn, Comfort Inn on 151 might be worth looking at. Nothing within walking distance from either so unfortunately you'd have to drive.

Nice web site. When I came in back in '72, only spiders had web sites!
