Has anyone planted asparagus here in SA? Was it successful? Can someone tell me when I should should do it? I have heard wonderful things about asparagus and thought it would be great to plant my own.

Also can I plant some veggies now? Which, any suggestions are appreciated.

Try growing Okra, Spinach, or Pumpkin.

Do a web search for San Antonio vegetable planting calendar and click on the first result (Bexar/Texas A&M).

I just planted my first vegetable garden this year and the asparagus is flourishing. But as some of the other poster alluded to, it is not really thick enough to eat right now, but just tall and thin. I was advised to let it grow and branch this year and then in future years it would grow in thicker stalks that I could pick and eat. It is handling the drought really well though better than anything else. Tomatoes are doing well, but need to be watered a lot.

We used to grow it up in the panhandle. Haven't tried any here. Fresh homegrown asparagus is really a treat.
My basil and other herbs love this weather. Peppers do well in the heat also.

Trivia; the only two vegatables that are perennials.....Asparagus and Rhubarb

I planted tomato plants in the "as seen on TV" upsidedown tomato planter and they are doing very well! I had my first three tomatoes last week.
Now, with the price of red peppers at $2.00 each, I found pepper plants and am going to plant them in the upside planter as well.

I love asparagus! I may stick them in the upside planter as well. Now, the hunt is on to find Asparagus plants...

I did it too... and guess what? The squirrels ate all the leaves, they left the stems bare. Of course the plants stopped to grow in the planter.
