May be going to San Antonio in Sept to see RiverWalk, etc. Need a decent motel with near by dog day care. Any suggestions?

Are you staying at a hotel on the River Walk? If so, I don't know of any dog hotels in that area. Now if you're going to stay at a hotel out by SeaWorld or don't mind being about 20+ minutes away from your dog, I can highly recommend the Petsmart Dog Hotel @ Alamo Ranch. My chow stayed there for a week while we were in Paris and she actually didn't want to leave. They spend a lot of time playing with similar sized dogs and she lived in a house full of much smaller dogs that she couldn't really play with, so she was in paradise.

edit- forgot to mention this and you probably already know it, but you're going to need to have physical proof that your dog's shots are all up to date. I know Petsmart will not bend on that one and I'd imagine most others won't either.

There are two other Petsmart Pet Hotels in San Antonio, in addition to the one mentioned at Alamo Ranch. One of them is on Park Central, just off Hwy 281, near the airport. Naturally, there are several hotels around the airport, and Hwy 281 leads into downtown.

There are also several independent local pet day care options in the area, ranging from kennels to resorts. You're more likely to find those kind of places in suburban areas, rather than the downtown/riverwalk area.

On a side note, you can take your pet (on a leash) to the public walkways along the riverwalk, although most businesses along the route probably won't allow them in their establishments. Some of the restaurants that have outdoor tables along the riverwalk might allow pets at those tables.
