Can't believe no one has said Los Barrios. They won the Bobby Flay throwdown on Food TV.
Great place and close for us. They also have Hacienda out in the 1604 hell hole.

Oscar's is still there and I love it. It's a treat to go there and feed the family. They still have that funky drive through too!

There's a little dive on the near west side called Ray's Drive In. Interesting interior decor and we LOVE their puffy tacos. My vegetarian son was very happy to learn that their bean version has no animal fat. They are located off of Guadalupe & 19th and they still have car curb service as well.

The best thing is price. I think that three beef puffy tacos are around $5 or $6 and will leave you stuffed. Portion sizes are really generous, so much so that I have learned to really watch the "eyes bigger than stomach" thing when we go there and I have saved money and my waistline as a result.

I prefer this place to Henry's and many other places I've tried. IMO Henry's puffy tacos weren't any better, and they were smaller and more expensive. Puffy tacos have been my favorite thing since I was little, growing up in Corpus Christi. I strongly recommend Ray's, but they are closed Monday and it's cash only (though they do have an ATM inside), FYI.

If you are going to Henry's, order the freshly squeezed lemonade!!!! It is the best.

You would be surprised, actually! I've got a Mexican food place on every corner in every direction, it seems, here on the West side and still only a handful of those actually have puffies! Weird but true. I know this because they are my absolute favorite Tex-Mex food item. Followed by gorditas (which seem to be much easier to find).

Hop in your time machine and head on over to El Rancho (preferably before the downgrade towards the end).

I had a few at a restaurant off Pat Booker about 6-7 years ago that were excellent. I don't recall the name, and not sure if they are still around.
