I have been wanting to visit the "southside" of SA for some time now. What are some places to avoid (due to gang activity/crime) and what are some great restaurants to go check out in this part of SA. I dont care if they are hole in the wall taco joints, if someone can recommend great restaurants that would be great.

I live on the northside but work on the southside. I can't really recommend any areas to avoid as I have felt safe wherever I have gone. Feels just as safe as Alamo Heights to me but of course the negative is that Southside is dirtier than the northside and that may throw you off. It has gotten a lot better over the last three years however.

For great BBQ southside, go to B&B Smokehouse off pleasanton street.

For decent mexican, go to don pedros. Not my favorite pick but certainly an southside institution.

I'll second Don Pedro's, but only if they have mole chicken that day. It's by far the best mole anything I've ever had anywhere. I'll also second that the southside isn't all that as far as dangerous and crazy. Hell, Lackland is located on the southside.

For great Breakfast Taco's there is Taco Haven on S. Presa.

For lunch you might try Bolner's Meat Market. Opened in 1914 in the same building it is in today.

Visit Some of the missions while you are there. If you go by Mission San Jose around eating time there is Nicha's Comida Mexicana almost across the street.

Have fun. The southside has some great history behind it.

I'm a NW-sider but I love the South side. There are some great people living there and good restaurants, and if you want a good deal on mechanical work or tires or basically any type of "service" things (not gutter stuff, I mean legit), the South side is a great place to go. I love Don Pedro's, and not just for the mole. Lots of people swear by bud Jones, but it's just OK to me.

For some good seafood--well, it's been a while, but I think it's called the Texan.....on Pleasanton. Like I said, it's been a couple of years but it was very tasty.

There is a little hole-in-the-wall on Commercial, south of Military Drive, near the Valero--catty corner to it, basically, that has the best carne guisada taco I've ever eaten in San Antonio. Better brush up on your espanol, though....nice people serving a great taco! There's also Brenda's Burgers, over near kelly, just before going over the bridge.....take cash. They are decent burgers.

I give a hearty second to Snappy Bob's Bolner's rec. Good stuff!

To be honest, I think it may get a little scary after the sun goes down....but like everywhere, keep your head up and be aware.

I hope these videos help with your deciding on where to visit. take care and have fun! BTW, if you go to tourist places like the missions you should be okay and surrounded by visitors to the city.

If you see my latest vid about eating Menudo at Don Pedro's, and then watch my previous vids you'd understand why I made a joke about it. Hair in the Menudo!~!
