My boyfriend had his expired for over a month. (I don't count because I currently don't own a vehicle.)
I haven't known anyone who lets it go for any longer than that.

He would still have to find out of SC has has an exemption for out-of-state military personnel to get out-of-state vehicles inspected. Some states do require it even if your vehicle is registered in another state but you're stationed there...

So if he does have an inspection from SC, he'd be good to go in Texas until that inspection expires.

If he's not required to get one there, he'd have to do so soon after returning here.

Oh, and to answer the original question, I keep my registration and inspections current.

Cheers! M2
Ha what you said. Very observant.. But yeah, to the poster who asked MadMax got it spot on. I normally fly back home for my trips to SA. So I don't have to worry about it. But like stated, I have a grace period whenever I do drive back home. I get my registration via mail each year.

Max as far as I know I'm kinda in a grey area.. South Carolina doesn't really notice, nor care since I have Texas plates. They just make sure my registration is up to date. I don't have to do any State inspection here. Kinda fun seeing how long I can go. Besides it's so easy to get a sticker in certain parts of San Antonio.

Having out of state plates has it's perks. Like here for instance, the tint laws are a lot more strict. But since I have Texas plates the laws don't apply to me. So my tint is legal, even though for natives the very same tint could get them a ticket.

Thanks again Max for explaining that perfectly to the other poster. Saved me some trouble.
