Can any of you tell me who the top cancer treatment doctors and treatment centers are in San Antonio? I am especially interested in multiple myeloma if that helps in your responses. Thank you very much.

I would honestly not go anywhere in SA. I would go straight to MD Anderson in Houston. It's only a 3-ish hour drive for the top notch 2nd best care in the entire country.

Also heard the best things about MD Anderson. I've known many coming in from other states to be seen there. Good luck, I hope everything is okay.

Well since you asked about San Antonio and not Houston... The Cancer Therapy and Research Center is a good start - "CTRC is recognized as a National Cancer Institute (NCI)–designated Cancer Center, the only one in the region"

Cancer Therapy & Research Center at The University of Texas Health Science Center

Also take a look at the START center

I would second the recommendation for START and CTRC. We weren't that excited about CTRC and went with a START oncologist, but depending upon your situation, you may like them.

Re: MD Anderson, mixed reviews. Some people rave, some people have not been happy. What matters most is the relationship you develop with your oncologist and other specialists, so that is very person-dependent.

Having watched 2 family member settle for local treatment (and not make it) , if I were ever faced with cancer I would March straight to MD Anderson in Houston.

As said earlier, it's all about your oncologist and your comfort level with them. San Antonio has some incredibly well respected physicians.

MD is also a great choice. I have friends who's three year old had a brain tumor. They went to MD Anderson for the new proton treatment, after the tumor was surgically removed. They were very happy with everything. Going back this week to start his chemo.

Since you mention Myeloma, I am guessing you will need a board certified dr in both Hematology and Medical Oncology. There are surprisingly not that many in San Antonio that were on my major insurance. I have seen 2. I have been to both the START Center and Cancer Care of South Texas. I prefer the Start Center. I saw Dr. Scott Ulmer. Nice caring man, clean facility and I did not feel like I was a number. If you have any other questions feel free to pm me. Good Luck!

Dr. Gunuganti is a good hematologist, and a nice guy. He's in Stone Oak.
