We dont have rocks so digging is not an issue.

Below is what I am planning to do:

- Use tap in the backyard as water source (it is going to save us from lot of piping running around the house if we use main line/tap around the garage)

- Power the timer from a plug inside family room (covered by a fancy box from inside)

- Run power line through the wall to the box outside on the other side of the wall (I am planning to buy this timer covered by an all-weather box)

- This makes timer close to tap saving me from lot of wiring. So the (covered) wires from timer and the water line itself go down to floor (which is a flagstone walkway I'm planning to cut) so that power and water pipes reach to an anti-siphon valve first and then to a 6-zones valves controller box in the grass

Did some R&D and dont feel a permit/license is required by city/county to do this type of work but I want to make sure. So any information is highly appreciated.

PS: My numbers are coming to about $300 vs. $2K+ if done by professionals ... what I am missing? Can I use quality (flexible) pipes people use for drip systems vs. PVC pipes?

You need a back flow preventer and that may need a permit from SAWS.

I know the backflow installed with my system required a permit but the contractor did all of that.

With all due respect.....what you're describing is gonna be a safety nightmare. You're talking about running a circuit through from an inside receptacle - what about GFCI protection? The piping - again, not to give you a hard time, but it would appear that you know little about the pipe itself, much less running it - that could easily come back to bite you.
Do yourself a favor - go to Home Depot or Lowe's, and they have DIY guidelines on this kind of project. Spend some time educating yourself on it, and what it takes to do it legitimately/legally, then proceed with care - if you'll do that, then you'll KNOW what you have to do to make it "legit" - and do it right the first time.

I think you need to tell SAWS that you are digging in your yard.

Actually, have read bunch of DIY guides. Problem is they always talk about "you might need a permit" since they are general. The purpose of the post was to get specific information. One person who was lot of help @ local HomeDepot I dont see him anymore but I'll try to talk to others and see if someone can help me understand legal requirements.

GFCI protection is a good point. I now plan to use one (which might require a separate permit ). Thanks!

Well, you WILL need a permit on the backflow preventer.

From SAWS Cross-Connection Control and Backflow Prevention Program
Permitting and inspection of new installations, repairs or replacements for internal backflow assemblies is administered through the City of San Antonio's Plumbing Inspections Section. Plumbing Inspection staff may be contacted at 210-207-8279.

I've had a couple of co-workers in the past who installed DIY underground sprinkler systems at their houses. Apparently, nothing to prevent a homeowner from doing it themselves, but they both mentioned they had to get a permit from the City (San Antonio), and have it inspected & signed off by a City inspector.
