I was thinking of your wanted life style area and working out of downtown. You would be going out of town to work when everyone else is coming into town to work. That is, unless you go to work at 5 PM.
The suggestion of Southtown, Monte Vista, Tobin Hills, Mahncke Park(prejudiced there), King William, and Government Hill is better for your lifestyle. Those areas are all close to downtown and close to the museums, theatres, bars, parks, zoo, riverwalk, bike trails.
You don't sound like the kind of people who want to pack the car to go the riverwalk or a bike ride in the park.

It's a reverse commute from downtown up I-10. If you're near highways, it's about 20 minutes, 30 minutes most. The extra time will be on surface roads w/traffic lights.

How much do you care about walkability? Are you comfortable with getting in your car to go anywhere, or do you like the idea of walking to the restaurants/bars/galleries, etc?

One area between the loops is the Medical Center. Housing stock is a bit mixed, some soul-less subdivisions, some interesting 70s ranch stuff, and some very interesting mid-century modern stuff. Walkability is limited, but there are some options in some places. outside 1604, there are some new developments (and wasn't the Rim billed as being mixed used?). I'm a downtown person myself, but you might look at the possibilities near 1604. Again, the big issue is how much you care about getting in your car vs. walking to attractions.
