My daughter is in the NJROTC program and has been practicing at school using the school's rifles to be on the armed drill team. She wants/needs to practice at home but can not borrow a rifle to take home to practice with. Is there a place locally that I can find the original or a replica? They have the replica's online, but they weigh about 4lbs unlike the real thing, 8lbs. I found a replica of the M1 Garand, DrillAmerica® Rifle with Moving Bolt - Replica Rifles - Military Gear | Parade Decorations, and it is the correct weight, but I have no idea if it is comparable to the Springfield 1903.

The Springfield '03 was a bolt-action - the one in the link is a M1, a totally different weapon. I checked a few sources, found the same issue you did - will keep lookin'!

Southern Ohio Gun has Springfield 1903-A3 Rifle De-Mill - Default Store View (http://www.southernohiogun.com/springfield-1903-a3-rifle-de-mill-1.html - broken link) for $179...

Quote:
These U.S. surplus 1903-A3 drill rifles are all complete, all original parts with original finish, wood stocks. These guns have their barrels plugged and welded, boltface and cutoffs welded as well. Only the front sight blades have been removed by the government for long-term storage. Quantities are limited.
I believe despite these modifications they still need to go through a Federal Firearms Licensed (FFL) dealer (since they are "demilled" and not "destroyed;" see this auction for example). If they do, I can help out if you do want to order one; DM me.

Also, I will try asking on a Texas gun forum TRN and I frequent, maybe someone on there can help. There's also a large gun show at the SA Event Center (http://www.saxetshows.com/_schedule.htm - broken link) (Marbach and 410) this weekend (4-5 Sep) if you want to try there.

Oh, and be careful of Sarco; I have heard they sometimes take a very long time to fulfill their orders! CMP can be the same way, although since that is a government-run program I would trust it much more.

Cheers! M2

Thanks for the leads TexasRedneck and Major! I have seen the Sarco website, and I like the Southern Ohio price. I was hoping I could find one locally. I did see the advertisement for the gun show this weekend and will try and go check it out tomorrow.

I wonder if you can get one of http://www.paradestore.com/detail.as... parade rifles and add weight to it? It would be the cheaper solution, but I understand she wants one that weighs the same as the ones her NJROTC unit trains with. These are only 2.5-3.5 pound each, much lighter than the 8-8.5 pounds of a "real" 1903...

I also found someone who said 1903 drill rifles are sometimes advertised in Shotgun News, which you can usually find at most book stores and some Walmarts...

Here is another source: Dixie Gun Works Training Rifle, although SOG is cheaper and a real 1903 drill rifle.

CheerMom

Not sure if you ever found one, but I just got the flyer for Southern Ohio Guns and they have WWII 1903-A3s on sale from $179.95 down to $139.95!

Any gunsmith could easily demil it for you. Heck, it probably wouldn't even require a gunsmith, but if you need any help or have any questions feel free to DM me.

Cheers! M2

Actually, that may be a one-day only sale on 2 December, it's kinda hard to tell by the flyer and their web site has no further info on it.

They are also drill rifles, meaning their barrels have been plugged and welded, and the bolt faces and cutoffs as well, so no need to go through a Federal Firearms License (FFL) holder as they are non-functioning collector rifles.

Call them for more info or if you have any questions (1-800-944-4867).

Cheers! M2
