Wildlife struggling to survive drought|WOAI: San Antonio News

What effects has the drought had on animals that you've noticed? What have you seen?

Here's a bit of water for the animals:

Too bad it's not nearly enough. And it's virtual....never to leave your monitor.

It is sad but the ones who survive leave stronger and more robust colonies which thrive. Which is good.

I put a huge bucket outside for all the deer. I counted 16 of them the other day.

This year and 2009 have been just awful for all kinds of wildlife. I'm doing what I can for them out here. Water, deer feed and birdseed. Some of the birds are okay if they stay close to places where people put out water and birdseed for them. Of course, some birds also need insects to eat and there aren't very many of those. I've seen some kinds of birds come to my feeders that I haven't seen before. Orioles came to my hummingbird feeder recently...haven't seen those before. And more migrating hummingbirds are here than normal. The deer look really pathetic, very few fawns are around this year. There's practically nothing out in the wild for the wildlife, so some come looking for help from those who can help them out a little. The lizards are about gone, no toads left. Very few butterflies are seen. Unfortunately, some wild hogs are still around!

I live in the Hollywood park area and have seen more blue jays than usual. I have water out there for the deer and they all look fine. As far as they're concerned, I think that they're well taken care of. I think I'll get some bird seed and deer feed and maybe a bird bath for them.

What's gonna happen to the Monarch butterfly migration? Isn't it happening right around now? If the drought took a lot of their flowers out of commission, how will they survive?

Skinny cows and horses are all around my area. Even the wasps and bees will bombard my plants after I water them. I continue to pray for a wet Fall/Winter.

A couple of weeks ago I was hand watering my lawn and birds started dive bombing through the water stream. Since then I have been leaving a frisbee with water out in my backyard in the shade. A couple of weeks ago a squirrel was cooling itself stretched out flat on my backyard shaded concrete area. I have never seen a squirrel in my area before. I live about a block away from a greenbelt area and I guess it moved closer to where it could find water.
