SA ranked #4 to be exact, and the only big city in the list.

Their criteria were:
"We considered the mix of entertainment options they had to offer, the planning that went into their design, and the beautiful architecture and green spaces that inspire interaction.

These downtowns are well thought out, walkable and easy to navigate. There's a range of flavors to be found in upscale eateries and casual cafés, while indie theaters, glossy off-Broadway productions, and family-friendly museums offer residents and visitors endless ways to spend their days. Buildings that have stood the test of time or showcase the edge of modern architecture add to the appeal, with parks and open spaces allowing a break from the city scene. "

San Antonio has one of the best downtown scenes
in America - San Antonio Business Journal

There's still room for improvement but overall I concur!!

And all the locals complain that it's too touristy and how they rarely visit...

Some things are based on opinions. If what SA has is what you like it is right at the top. If you think another city has more of what you like then your entitled to think that. It's all good.

Very well said. Some people love it, some people don't. Just like everything else.

If the RIver Center Mall was renovated/updated we would be 1 or 2 that place is rundown.

I went downtown not long ago; went to the Tower of Americas for happy hour drinks and had a nice time, went walking around by Hemisfair park which was nice as well, then strolled through river center mall and was disgusted by the people that hang out there; they looked like gang member thugs and that totally ruined the moment. Before this, I hadn't been downthere in many years.. If you go downtown, just keep out of that mall...

I'm a big San Antonio booster, but I really don't want to be on any list that sandwiches us between Franklin, Tennessee and Indianapolis, Indiana. Yikes.

I heard Rivercenter was supposed to renovated. When? I don't know. Has anyone heard anymore on this?
