A couple of weeks ago I noticed a sticky material on the surface of nearly everything outside my house- the grill cover, patio chairs, trash bin, even on the leafs of some of the plants. It might sound crazy, but I think it is also on the pavement, as my running shoes made a sticky sound when running in the am. What on earth is this? Is it something produced by trees and released into the environment? Is it a product of an insect or another plague? Is it pollution that came with rain? (que mugrero trajo el agua!) It's driving me nuts not knowing what this is. Please help!

If there's a lot of tree cover where you're finding this sticky stuff then it's probably honeydew or similar secretion from bugs eating the tree leaves. About 7 months out of the year, I don't park my car under trees for this reason. It's a PITA to clean off. If it's bad enough to cover everything, you might want to have a pest control specialist out to have a look.

Trees don't just drip sap from their leaves. It's honeydew from aphids or similar leaf-munchers.

Fascinating! I didn't know exactly what honeydew was, besides the fuit of course, and had no clue it was produced by aphids. I'm now afraid that my house will become a giant beehive with bees feeding on this stuff day and night.

It is the waste matter from the aphids who are sap sucking the Pecan trees and crepe mertyles. It is water soluable. I washed down the sidewalk and porch yesterday. It's back again but not so bad. I just keep rinsing it off.

I just talked to a representative at the Texas Agricultural Extention Service. It is definatley Aphid secretions. Specifically Yellow Aphids that only attack trees. They are not intersested in your veggie plants or ornamental roses etc. They will not hurt your pecan trees due to the huge size of the trees compared to the size of the pest. It may cause your pecan trees to defoliate a little earlier but they are going to drop all of the leaves soon anyway. The only one being advised to attempt control are commercial growers. It's just a particularly heavey infestation this year.

No, it looks almost like a frost, especially on glass. Very small, clear dots.
