Not even sure if that is even the correct term to use. I saw this on my hubby's friends FB page that her hubby got laid off from the Navy.... apparently 1 of the 3000 that they are letting go of.

Is this treated as if you were laid off from working in the corporate world? I am not related nor do I know anyone personally who is in the military so not sure how things work.

Do they have to look for another job? go back to school? I mean whoever said that the military was stable to be in??

Is he active duty or is he a civilian employee? If he's a civilian employee, it's usually called Reduction-in-Force (RIF). Irregardless, obviously he needs to look for a job in the private sector. He should be eligible for unemployment compensation in the interim.

Years ago after I got a medical discharge from the Navy, I got unemployment compensation, but only for 13 weeks. The person at the unemployment office told me Congress had to compromise on unemployment benefits for ex-military since some did not want to give benefits to those who had received undesireable discharges (commonly known as BCDs, bad conduct discharges), so the compromise was that ex-military, irregardless of the type of discharge, would only get 13 weeks of unemployment compensation rather than the normal 26 weeks. This was 24 years ago so that may have changed. Your friend's husband still needs to apply for unemployment; they will tell him how many weeks of compensation he will receive.

I wish him well in finding other employment.

"The quickest way to reduce the budget for the military is to cut people," Scales said. "They can be pulled out of the ranks immediately and the savings are immediate. Whereas when you try to cut programs often times for new weapons systems it takes years, if not decades, to get all that money back."

Unfortunately the above quote is oh so true.

If it's due to RIF, the guy can be be put on a Priority Placement Program (PPP) which will fight to find him a new job for 1 year. So many benefits out there and it's much better than being laid off in the private sector. This happened to me last year and out of 30 people in my office that were placed in that program, all were given new jobs elsewhere. When on a PPP, you get hiring preference over everyone else.

He'll be fine. Don't worry about. Military gets first preference in EVERYTHING.

The OP also didn't seem to clarify. Are you Navy civilian, Navy reserve, Navy active duty?

Sounds like civilian, don't think they "lay off" military. There's a big DoD budget cut going around.

yep, and it's affecting contractors, too. It really, really sucks. Lackland alone is losing over 700 civilian personnel. That's a lot of people. 9,000 Air Force civilian personnel total. Have no idea about Navy, Army, or Marines.
