Fun & Educational Activities for a Six Year Old Boy (San Antonio: amusement park, houses)

Hi:

My name is Blaine. Every other weekend my 6 year old son, Mark, and I do fun & educational things together in and around San Antonio.

Here are a few things we have done and learned:

1. Visited Mission San Jose. Learned about the Indians who used to live here and how they lived. Saw kilns, wells, grist mill, houses, etc.

2. Visited Scobee Planetarium. Learned about stars, the universe, galaxies, solar systems, and our Sun.

3. Visited Cascade Caverns. Learned that Saber Tooth Tigers and Woolly Mamoths that used to live in the caverns. Learned that Blind Salamanders live there now. Learned that the caverns are made of limestone.

I have a 6 year old granddaughter. I have taken her to: the local library to see a free play by the Magik Theatre performers, the Magik Theatre itself to see several plays, the art gallery at UTSA for the opening of a former student's work, and mini golf at Bitters & 281 (she got a hole-in-one on the 11th hole and won a free drink!). She is very artistic so I am trying to find creative things to do with her. Thanks for your suggestions.

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering about the Magik Theater. I just heard about it.

We took my grandson to "The Nutcracker" at the Majestic for Christmas. A big NO NO for a 6 year old boy. When I asked him what his favorite part was he replied "when the curtain closed"!

But I heard that the Magik Theater had their own production of "The Nutcracker" and I was wondering if it would be more "age and boy appropriate"?

I also saw on their web site that there is a summer camp? Wonder if it is any good.

My grandson's 2 favorite summer excursions were the kayaking under the Austin Congress Street Bridge to look at the bats and the "spelunking" at cascade caverns. I think the cascade caverns were my favorite too.

Yes to both of these. Magik is a children's theater. Their shows couldn't be more kid-friendly. None of them are more than an hour. There's plenty of entertainment value for parents, too. My family used to get the $99 season pass and I heartily recommend that. IMO, there is no better value in family entertainment in town.

The summer camp is good, too. My kids attended for a couple of years. It's especially geared toward extroverts, so if your kid is outgoing, he will thoroughly enjoy it.

Will vouch for everything Bo said about Magik Theater. Also, my kids always have liked the Institute of Texan Cultures.

Natural Bridge Caverns is good, too. Aquarena Springs as well.

SA is very kid-friendly. Don't forget about the Zoo, The Children's Museum in San Antonio and New Braunfels. There are many parks in SA to explore. Kiddie Park on Broadway (the 1st Children's amusement Park in the United States), The San Antonio Symphony has a children's series. Check out the musicals at The Majestic, Mary Poppins a couple months ago was popular with the children folk. The Witte Museum, of course. Try fishing at a Catfish farm (my dad used to to take me there as a kid). Natural Bridge Wildlife tours. etc. etc. etc.

The Witte Museum is a great place. They have an exhibit just for kids and all sorts of activities. You can also get a annual family membership for a low cost.
