Actually most major companies will now rent with a debit card. The catch is that I believe they will put a hold on your account of a few hundred dollars. I looked into it recently because I didnt keep credit cards (at the time) and was taking a business trip. (I have a card now for such situations)

You need a credit card.

Without one your best bet is to ask a family member or
a good friend perhaps if their card could be used.

You don't NEED a credit card for any of it. Just call and ask, as I've seen Enterprise, Thrifty and Hertz locations all accept debit with the caveat that they will usually hold the needed funds up front. All you've got to do is make sure you have the money and you'll be set.

As a side note, do make sure that your insurance policy covers rental cars, as you're not using a credit card and won't have their protection behind you. Better to be safe than sorry. You can always take full coverage from the rental counter.

Hmm, interesting they accept debit cards now.

I always use a credit card... and notice they put the
same hold on funds there too.

I assume if you can ante up the cash that would equal the 'hold' on a debit card you might be able to rent. If you're full of tats, piercings, and rods, don't even try.

Budget Rent a Car in San Antonio is a franchise location. You can rent most of their vehicles with a bank (except Woodforest) or credit union issued debit card. There is a minimum $300.00 deposit. This company does not accept the loadable debit cards like the ones from NetSpend, Greendot etc. Plus there is no credit check.
