I am looking to cook up a goose for Christmas. I was always able to find a local goose where we used to live (raised by Mennonites sold by a local butcher shop), but after looking in vain for a fresh local turkey for Thanksgiving, I suppose it may be impossible here.

Does anyone have any suggestions? The HEB does sell goose, but they are the usual grocery store brand that sits there frozen all year, often diseased, and always horrible tasting. Any help greatly appreciated.

I was going to suggest the state Department of Agriculture's Go Texan web site. Searching on this page: Texas Department of Agriculture (http://www.gotexan.org/internet/gotexan/search.jsp - broken link) I didn't see "goose" listed under Food Products/Poultry. Maybe there's another way to look it up there?

Try Cooper's Meat Market on Broadway. Number is (210) 820-3838. They should have it. I don't know if it's fresh or not, can't remember.

Thank you for that! I phoned them. They said $6.99 /lb and ~10lbs. It comes in frozen and is not local. It is natural and free range however. It's an option, but holy cow (or goose), that is ~$70 for a goose!

well I found the source of their geese:
Ordering Information - Schiltz Goose Farm & Schiltz Foods Products (http://www.roastgoose.com/ordering.html - broken link)

$4.60/lb or $46.75 for a 10-12 lb goose. Much more reasonable. I think I'll just order from them unless I can find a local source.

Sounds like a local hunter could really clean up by selling his hunted geese! Someone should step up
