doesnt matter and your understanding of statistical data and how it presents itself in real world applications is lacking.

68% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

Statistics do not prove anything. Forty percent of people surveyed know that. This thread is hilarious. Rights violated, blood drawn everywhere, racial profiling, etc. I have been drunk as hell for the past 12 days. Have I driven once......uh not a chance in hell. I am a responsible drunk. Y'all act like your rights being violated is something new. Big brother has been doing that for years son! Don't trust anyone over 40

Waste of time and money. Too bad San Antonio as a whole can not think more progressively and install better transit options.

A mandatory blood test to prove you are not drunk will be an easy way to get citizens coded for DNA.

HOw so? We ARE talking about drunk driving. I drink alcohol once in a blue moon. I talk on cell phone and drive 70% of my driving hours behind the wheel. Less than 1% of my driving hours while intoxicated (mildly of course). How does that not affect your stats from your data? Unless you're ready to show how large your pool was and the error range, there's no need to be so snippy toward other opinions different from your own.

Better transit options - we've discuss that and mass transit doesn't really work except for some very specific corridors. The city is too spread out.

How about making everyone drive smart cars, that little Fiat or Minicoopers? Get the giant trucks with one dude or the aircraft carrier sized Suburbans and Esclades off the road, driven by the trophy wife or upscale matron - plus Macho Man Hummers.

Or we all get scooters.

Some of this, I'm serious about -

Your understanding of statistics is appalling.

Most accidents are caused by distracted driving which is the equivalent of being drunk as far as impairment goes. The best way to look at the statistics is to look at everyone at the individual level. If all other driving hazards are taken out of the equation, would a sober person or a drunk person be more likely to get into an accident? Obviously, a drunk person would be more likely to get into an accident, so driving sober is not more hazardous because it is not the cause of accidents in the first place. What do you think would happen if there were just as many drunk drivers during the day as distracted drivers?

People are much more likely to speed and talk/text on their cell phones than drive drunk. The average person is more likely to commit smaller crimes that come with less penalties; or in the case of cell phone use, it's not even illegal in the first place. Another thing to take into consideration is that drunk driving mostly occurs during a limited time frame in the night/early morning hours and on weekends when there is hardly anyone on the road. Distracted driving occurs around the clock including daytime and weekdays when there are many more cars on the road. All said and done, drunk driving is just as much of an impairment as distracted driving, but

1. Far fewer people drive drunk.
2. Drunk driving mostly occurs when the roads are nearly empty.

16% of traffic fatalities in 2009 were linked to distracted driving. In 2009, 32% of traffic fatalities involved a driver with a BAC above the legal limit. So while drunk driving causes less accidents, alcohol-related accidents are much more likely to lead to fatalities.

Percentage of deaths linked to distracted driving remains steady - CNN
Drunk driving statistics

Another unfair way the statistics were presented is that all other causes of accidents were lumped together and compared to drunk driving. There are a couple of dozen significant causes of accidents which need to be evaluated separately such as animals in the road, weather, falling asleep, etc. When you separate all of the categories, drunk driving is the 3rd leading cause of accidents even though far fewer people engage in it than the other top causes. By the way, I think distracted drivers need to face stiffer penalties along with drunk drivers.

As long as we have idiotic judges such as Pat Priest, this problem will never be resolved here...

Day after officer's death, probation ruling shocks - San Antonio Express-News

The SAPD arrested nearly 5,800 people for DWI in 2010, up from more than 5,000 in 2009 and 4,324 in 2008 (2011 figures are not yet available). That's over 15 per day!

And if there is any involvement by the SAPD in this, it is to get the legal system to do their part in stemming this problem. Obviously it's not the fault of the police, they're doing their jobs if they're arresting 15 people a day for drinking and driving. It's the court systems and morons like Priest who are not imposing the maximum penalty under the law to put drunk drivings in jail for as long as possible!

Until such time as these idiots who drink and drive are removed from the roads, we'll have to live with such tragedies as this...

Victim of DWI crash never let friends drive drunk - San Antonio Express-News

And a few think that a legal warrant to have someone's blood drawn after they've been stopped for drinking and driving violates their Constitutional rights?!? I wonder how they'll feel the day after one of their friends or loved ones is killed by a drunk driver. I can pretty much guarantee you their opinion will be considerably different...

By the way, anyone who thinks this is a unique problem needs to do a little research. A recent anti-DUI push in Los Angeles County yielded 1500 arrests! The year prior a similar effort over the same time period netted 1260 arrests...
