why is it that some tax places get you more $$$ than others. dont you plug in the #s i give and the computer calculates. Or are there better tax people than others or are some just scheming. the reason i ask is that this is my first year with a (very) small business and am looking for a good honest person who knows what they are doing. I know i took a loss but i also have 3 dependents. I just dont want to owe anything.

You just answered your own question. Some tax preparers are better than others. Although I am not self-employed,I never use H&R Block, Jackson Hewitt, etc. to prepare my taxes. If you have your own business, you may want to find a reputable CPA firm to handle not only your year end taxes but also your quarterly tax reports. Good luck with your new business.

Ask around w/your fellow small-business owners and see who they use, then sit down and interview a few and see who seems to suit you best! As noted, STAY AWAY from the guys you see on TV...
